Formal: add ㅂ/습니다 or ㅂ/습니까

- Usage: in formal settings, to people we do not know very well, polite expression.
- Keep in mind: replace 다 with 까 to make question.
1. The present tense:  if the verb stem ending is
• a vowel/ㄹ: add ㅂ니다 (*drop ㄹ)
• a consonant: add 습니다
2. The past tense:
• vowel ㅏ/ㅗ: add 았습니다
• other vowels: add 었습니다

• 하다: turn to 했습니다
3. The future tense:  if the verb stem ending is 
• a vowel/ㄹ: add ㄹ 겁니다
• a consonant: add 을 겁니다

1. The present tense:

a.Vowel/ㄹ + ㅂ니다:
• 이다: 입니다
- 저는 소영 입니다.
• 만나다:
• 다니다 : 다닙니다
• 계시다 (Hor. of 있다): 계십니다; 계십니까?
• 가르치다 : 가르칩니다 (teach)
- 일 주일에 세 번 한국어를 가르칩니다.
- 일 주일에 네 번 영어를 가르칩니까?
b. Consonant + 습니다:
• 반갑다: 반갑습니다 (glad)
- 만나서 반갑습니다.
• 고맙다: 고맙습니다 (thankful, grateful)
- 고맙습니다.
• 그렇다 : That's right.
- 그렇습니다.
